What Do I Need to Start Fishing?
What Do I Need to Start Fishing?
This is one of the first questions every new fisherman asks.
What do I need to start fishing?
The gear answer is short. The knowledge answer is longer. And the knowledge answer is the one that will actually make you a better fisherman.
This page covers both.
The Basic Gear Checklist
A beginner does not need a full tackle shop to start fishing. Here is what you actually need:
- Rod and reel. A medium-action spinning rod and reel combo is the most practical starting point for most beginners. It handles a wide range of fishing situations in both freshwater and saltwater. Buy something reliable, not necessarily expensive.
- Fishing line. Monofilament in six to twelve pound test covers most beginner situations. It is easy to handle and easy to tie. Fluorocarbon is a step up in clear water. Braid is strong but harder to manage for beginners.
- Hooks. A small selection in a few sizes. Match the hook to the fish you are targeting and the bait or lure you are using.
- A dependable knot. The improved clinch knot is the right starting point. Learn it before you go. A bad knot loses fish. For more, read Fishing Knots for Beginners: Start With the Improved Clinch Knot.
- Lures or bait. A small selection that matches the species and water you are fishing. You do not need every lure in the store. For more, read What Is the Best Fishing Lure for Beginners?
- Weights and swivels. A few split shot weights and barrel swivels for basic rigging.
- Pliers. For hook removal and rigging. One of the most useful tools a beginner can carry.
- A small tackle box or bag. Keep it organized. A beginner does not need a large tackle box. They need a few things they can find quickly.
- A fishing license. Required in most states for anglers above a certain age. Check your local regulations before you fish.
- Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Especially important for saltwater and open-water fishing.
The First Real Upgrade Is Not Gear
Once you have the basic gear, the next upgrade most beginners think about is more gear.
A better rod. A better reel. More lures. A bigger tackle box.
That is not the most valuable upgrade a beginner can make.
The most valuable upgrade is fishing knowledge. Understanding why fish feed, where fish are likely to be, what conditions change the bite, and how to notice signs fish are nearby will do more for your fishing than any single piece of gear.
A beginner with basic gear and real fishing knowledge will outfish a beginner with expensive gear and no system.
What You Need to Know Before You Cast
Before you pick a spot and make a cast, ask a few questions.
Where is the bait?
Is the tide moving or dead?
What is the wind doing?
Is the water color right for the species you are targeting?
Are fish likely to be feeding here right now, or are you only fishing here because someone caught fish here before?
Those questions lead to better decisions. Better decisions lead to more fish.

The Adult Beginner Path
The Young Anglers Field Guide was created for ages 8 to 18, but the knowledge inside it can also help adult beginners. It covers the fishing foundation any new angler needs: observation, patience, timing, bait behavior, moon awareness, weather awareness, and better decision-making on the water.
If an adult beginner wants to understand the Fishing Gods foundation without jumping straight into the deeper adult story, the Young Anglers Field Guide is a smart starting point.
The Serious Adult Path
If you already know the basics and want the deeper Fishing Gods story, start with the FISHING GODS Revised Edition.
That book is the cleaner and more approachable adult version of Captain Bill's Fishing Gods story and fishing knowledge system. It is for anglers who know there is more to fishing than luck, gear, and random advice.
The original 2019 FISHING GODS book is the raw legacy version for collectors, hard-core fishing addicts, and readers who want the early source book behind the Fishing Gods system.
Most readers should start with the Revised Edition.
Start Fishing. Then Start Learning.
The best way to start fishing is to get on the water with basic gear and start paying attention.
Notice what the water is doing. Notice where the bait is. Notice what changes before the bite happens and what changes before it stops.
That attention is the beginning of real fishing judgment.
Fishing Gods was built for fishermen who are ready to stop guessing and start understanding.
For more on building that foundation, read Fishing Tips for Beginners: How to Start Catching More Fish or How Do I Become a Better Fisherman?
